In Nuelland, wishes are real. You only have to speak them into existence.
Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?
There’s just one little problem.
Every wish comes with a price.
And believe me, the Spirits always collect.
On my grandmother’s seventieth birthday, she wished for everlasting beauty. The Spirits granted her wish, then took her eyes as payment. She got the eternal beauty she wanted, I suppose, although I doubt she imagined spending eternity unable to see it.
Do I feel sorry for her?
Not particularly.
My grandmother has hated me for as long as I can remember, and nobody in my family is willing to explain why.
But that’s the thing about Nuelland. You can wish for beauty, wealth, love, even power. You can wish for almost anything your heart desires.
Just don’t expect to walk away unchanged.
My brother learned that the hard way.
He wished to leave Nuelland. The Spirits denied his wish, then collected their dues anyway. They took his legs, his ears and his tongue. As if that wasn’t enough, they left him with a mind so broken that some days he doesn’t even recognise his own family.
Maybe that was the point.
Maybe they wanted the rest of us to look at him and understand what happens to people who dare to dream of leaving.
If you ask me, Nuelland isn’t a paradise. It’s a parasite dressed in paradise’s clothes.
And I’ve been planning to escape since I was fourteen.
The funny thing is, the Spirits don’t know.
Not yet.
Will Amina escape Nuelland, or will the Spirits make her pay for daring to dream?
