Moving from Lagos to London for skilled work: paperwork map and cost reality (2026)

Lagos energy and London grey are not the same weather system. Neither is the paperwork.
This is for people with a real UK skilled job path in view — not fantasy TikTok “pack your bags tomorrow” content. If you don’t have (or aren’t close to) a licensed sponsor and a role that fits the rules as published today, stop here and fix that first. Everything below assumes you’re aiming at a legitimate sponsored skilled route, not a shortcut.
The map (before the mood board)
Treat the move as five clusters. Miss one and the others get expensive.
- Job + sponsor reality — Certificate of Sponsorship / licensed sponsor, job that matches the visa category, contract terms you can explain.
- Visa file — identity, TB test if required for your circumstances, English evidence if required, criminal record certificates when asked, maintenance funds rules as they apply to you.
- Money reality — Home Office fees, healthcare surcharge, flights, first-month London burn (deposit + rent advance + transport + food).
- Landing week — NI number process, bank account friction, BRP/eVisa status checks, employer onboarding.
- Life admin — GP registration, council tax awareness, commute math, scam filter.
Print that list. Stick it on your fridge in Lagos. Mood boards are optional; this isn’t.
Cost reality (buckets, not fake naira figures)
I won’t invent a “total cost to move” number. Those screenshots age in weeks. Budget in buckets and fill amounts from official fee pages + your own quotes:

Lagos-specific trap: converting everything at the “uncle’s rate” the night before you fly. Use a conservative rate in your sheet and assume friction.
London-specific trap: underestimating deposits. “I’ll stay with a cousin for free” is a plan until it isn’t.
Paperwork sequence that usually wastes less money
While still in Lagos / Nigeria
- Confirm the sponsor is licensed and the role is real (job title, start date, location).
- Read the current Skilled Worker (or your actual route) guidance on GOV.UK — not a 2023 PDF in a Telegram group.
- Gather identity docs; check passport validity early.
- If a TB test is required for your case, book the approved clinic path — don’t improvise.
- Build a document folder: offer letter, CoS details when issued, bank evidence if needed, education/professional docs your employer asked for.
- Decide housing strategy: temporary first (hotel/Airbnb/short let) vs jumping straight into a tenancy. Both have costs; only one matches your risk tolerance.
After CoS / before you fly
- Lodge only when the file is consistent. Name spellings, dates, and job details must match across forms.
- Screenshot/print key confirmation emails. Cloud access fails at the worst airports.
- Tell your Nigerian bank you’ll be travelling; set up a way to receive salary in the UK without locking yourself out of naira obligations at home.
First 14 days in London
- Complete right-to-work / employer onboarding exactly as HR asks.
- Start NI number / tax setup through official channels.
- Open a bank account path — banks differ; bring what they list today.
- Register with a GP when you have an address path.
- Learn your commute before you sign a 12-month lease in Zone-hopeful.
Scams and “helpers”
If someone in Lagos or London asks you to:
- pay immigration fees to a personal account,
- “upgrade” your visa through a WhatsApp admin,
- or guarantee approval for a large upfront fee,
treat it as a fire alarm. Licensed advice exists; street guarantees do not.
Your embassy/high commission and GOV.UK pages beat any “connection.”
What “success” looks like by day 30
Not “I love London.” That’s weather-dependent.
Success looks like:
- You’re working for the sponsor on the terms you signed.
- You can receive salary into an account you control.
- Your immigration status documents/status checks are in order for how eVisas/BRP work at the time you arrive.
- You have a sleep-stable address and a written plan for month 2 rent.
- You’ve ignored at least three scam DMs.
